In 2023 the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre found that Ireland has the highest levels of loneliness in Europe with over 20% of respondents reporting feeling lonely most or all of the time compared to a 13% average across the EU. It is a recognised public health issue that impacts wellbeing both at an individual and societal level. It is associated with a range of negative health outcomes.

‘Where do we all belong?’ is a socially-engaged visual art project addressing loneliness in Co. Sligo, Ireland. Drawing on the tradition of mobile rural services, such as travelling shops and libraries, we spent a week driving across Sligo in a mobile research unit gathering anonymous surveys and reflections on loneliness. The feedback has inspired a visual art project and short film that we hope will inspire meaningful connections and promote social inclusion.
The font Helvetica was chosen for its quiet presence. Its simple,nneutral form speaks without drawing attention to itself, bringing together many voices as one. As one of the most familiar fonts in the world, it mirrors how loneliness can feel—everywhere, yet unseen.
